Young people raise money for Asthma UK
18 August 2016
A group of young people from the West Hyde area have spent their summer holidays raising money for Asthma UK in support of their friend, Chloe, who suffers from the condition.
The young people, who all attend Youth Connexions youth projects at West Hyde Youth Centre, started by approaching their local Tesco store in Rickmansworth to offer to do bag-packing to raise money for the charity. They packed bags at the store two days a week and the store managers were impressed by their polite and helpful attitude, saying they were a pleasure to have in their store. The young people were then delighted to receive a £35 donation from Tesco towards purchasing ingredients for a coffee and cake sale – the next part of their fundraising campaign.
Chloe and her friends then set about baking cakes and advertising the event – both to friends and family and to local businesses in the area. Held at West Hyde Youth Centre, and with the support of Youth Connexions youth workers, the event attracted a lot of people – including the two Tesco store managers who came along to give their support!
As a final push to raise as much money as possible, the young people also took part in a sponsored bike ride – cycling from West Hyde to Rickmansworth and back, including around the Aquadrome to form a 20km loop.
The total amount of money raised is expected to be several hundreds of pounds – all of which will benefit Asthma UK, and other sufferers of asthma. Chloe has had severe asthma all her life and has had to attend hospital every month for over a year.
“I am so proud of these young people” said Youth Connexions youth worker Elaine, “They have chosen to spend their summer holidays in such a positive way – and really come together as a group. It has been a pleasure to watch them achieve so much, they should be truly proud of their efforts”.
Youth Connexions youth projects take place at West Hyde Youth Centre every Monday and Friday evening during term time – plus additional days during school holidays – and are open to all young people aged 13-19 (up to 24 with a learning disability).
