Giving Young Carers in Welwyn Hatfield some quality time for themselves
18 January 2016
Since last October, Youth Connexions has been working with Stanborough School to deliver a weekly project for young carers.
Young people with caring responsibilities often feel isolated and lack the time to develop skills and enjoy leisure activities with other young people. This project enables them to build friendships with others in the same situation through the regular sessions, and additionally to gain skills such as teamwork and leadership through a variety of activities and games.
A caving trip was a step into the unknown that challenges the young people in new ways
The young people decide what they wish to include in the project, depending on their aspirations. The group has some ideas for future activities such as first aid and off site visits. In December, nine of them undertook a challenging caving trip to Herts Young Mariners’ Base.
Tracy Lee, Youth Connexions Senior Youth Worker, said “The session was planned to support the group in a fun activity that also helped them bond more as a group. The group worked very well together, helping each other to achieve.”
Stanborough School has said the project represents ‘great team work’.
