Navigate your Future workshops are helping young people prepare for the world of work

Navigate your Future, a package of pick and mix workshops for key stage 3, is inspiring students to think about their journey into the world of work.
It is designed to support schools to ensure young people are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of future life. As the labour market continues to change and students prepare themselves for a career in the 21st Century it becomes even more important for them to be able to understand how to brand themselves and identify the skills employers are looking for.
The practical workshops enable students to navigate the world of work and future options by helping them to develop and practice key employability skills, investigate careers and labour market information, and in addition develop resilience and positive thinking.
Feedback from students has been positive. One said: “It was very interactive, which meant we could get involved and it helped me to understand that you can learn valuable skills from different school subjects.” (Year 8 student, Stevenage).
Students also felt that workshops helped with option choices. “I have learnt what subjects I would need to take at GCSE to get the job I want.” (Year 8 student, Stevenage).
Reach for the Summit, a workshop focused on building resilience and aspirations, helps students to identify their dreams and goals for the future, and look at practical steps required to reach these. One student commented: “I enjoyed the fact that I now understand fully what I need to do to achieve my goal in life.” (Year 8 student, Cheshunt).
