Simon Balle students brush up on employability skills

07 May 2019

More than 400 Year 10-13 students at Simon Balle School in Hertford met a diverse range of national and international employers at a YC Hertfordshire careers fair.

Many industry sectors were represented, including construction, engineering, catering, law, life sciences, sports and fitness, with employers such as Deloitte, AD Architects, Hertfordshire Police, Rochford Gardens, DH Law, WSP, LGC Group, G Fit Personal Training and Borras Construct, taking part. Students also had the opportunity to speak with advisers from YC Hertfordshire, about their future options post-Year 11.

YC Hertfordshire Employment and Skills Coordinator David Hoskins, said:

“These events are really invaluable experiences for young people. Where else would they have the chance to speak face-to-face with such a diverse range of professionals in one afternoon? It provides a great opportunity for young people to think about their futures. YC Hertfordshire works very closely with schools when planning these events to ensure we meet the needs of their students and deliver an engaging and potentially life-changing experience for them.”

Also on offer was an employability session led by Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, where the skills and qualities Hertfordshire employers look for in young people were highlighted, across key industry sectors. The students discussed the Hertfordshire Skills Framework and were able to use this to identify and evidence some of their current skills, such as teamwork, adaptability, motivation, resilience and problem-solving skills, to help them prepare for moving into the world of work.

Feedback from the young people included:

“The employability session really helped me think about what I can offer an employer.”

“I now know more about the skills I need to help me get a job.”

“It was great to talk to employers and see the passion they have for what they do.”

The next step for students from year 10 will be a work experience placement, arranged by YC Hertfordshire where for many, they will get their first hands-on experience of the working world.
