Students in Hertsmere get in the know about staying safe
13 May 2016
Youth Connexions has been delivering sessions at Dame Alice Owens School, Potters Bar, exploring how to stay safe when it comes to sex, alcohol and drugs.
Youth Connexions staff from both the Welwyn Hatfield and Hertsmere teams came together to deliver the group sessions during April and May
Students from years 9 and 10 worked in groups with Youth Connexions Personal Advisers and Youth Workers. They learned how sexually transmitted infections are caused and gained an understanding of the symptoms and how they can be treated. Participants also became familiar with some of the contraceptive methods available.
In relation to drugs and alcohol, students gained an insight into how the effects of both can impact on physical and psychological well-being.
Here are some of the comments from the young people who took part:
“It was fun and educational. Non biased information.”
“I enjoyed having the personal experience of knowing what it’s like to be drunk because it deters me from getting drunk.”
“The activities and discussions were engaging because we were able to share our ideas.”
“I enjoyed the ‘Ask Frank’ videos as they were packed full of information.”
“It was inclusive, and provided a very welcoming and open environment for people to ask what they wanted.”
“It was informative but not so explicit that it was uncomfortable.”
