YC Hertfordshire Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week
04 February 2020
Are you a young person thinking about an apprenticeship? Do you want to earn while you learn? Are you keen to learn practical skills on the job? Are you worried about having the right GCSE results to secure an apprenticeship?
YC Hertfordshire Services for Young people are here to support you with exploring what your options are, writing your application and finding a work experience placement or a Saturday job that will develop your employability skills and increase your chances of getting that apprenticeship.
Over the past year our personal advisers have supported many young people with finding the right apprenticeship for them. Here are just a few success stories …
For one year 11 student who attended Bishop’s Stortford’s YC Hertfordshire Services for Young People Access Point in the spring of 2019, this was a life changing moment which led to him being able to sit his GCSE exams, despite not attending school since year 10, and culminated in him achieving GCSE qualifications and securing a week’s assessment with a national construction company who then offered him an apprenticeship. He wrote to his personal adviser,
“I am really happy. If it wasn’t for you, I would not have got this apprenticeship. I’m so glad I’ve secured something so fast and I am enjoying it!”
Another young person was supported by a personal adviser and found an extended work experience placement where he developed valuable employability skills. Through sheer determination and persistence this young person achieved his Level 2 English and Maths which enabled him to apply and successfully secure a bricklaying apprenticeship last autumn.
Finally, a third young person has turned their life around with the support of a personal adviser. Living in supported accommodation after some difficult personal situations and finding themselves homeless they met with a personal advisor and looked at ways in which they could rebuild their confidence and self-worth. Together they identified future goals which would help in preparing the way back into learning and work. This young person eventually secured an apprenticeship and the employer was really pleased and impressed with their capabilities and enthusiasm to learn. The young person commented,
“Going to the YC Hertfordshire Services for Young People Access Point has been a real turning point in my life. I now have goals to work towards and have met friends through work. Life is much better.”
At the heart of these case studies are young people who have shown commitment and determination to achieve and as we mark National Apprenticeship Week 2020, we celebrate their achievements and wish them well for the future.
YC Hertfordshire Services for Young People can provide you with valuable support, advice and guidance that will enable you to make positive steps towards building confidence, setting goals and moving forward with your career.
