More than 230 Year 10 students at Goffs Academy had the opportunity to meet with over 30 national and local companies from a diverse range of industry sectors as part of a careers carousel event organised by YC Hertfordshire Services for Young People in February.
Young people were able to gain a unique insight into the contrasting careers and experiences of the professionals they met which included; life scientists, engineers, solicitors, plumbers, logistics specialists, mechanics, bankers and the RAF. Students also had the opportunity to speak with advisers from YC Hertfordshire, about their future options post-Year 11 and complete mock interviews.
Feedback from the young people included:
“Seeing all the different employers and seeing how and what they do has widened my horizons”
“I enjoyed learning about interviews and what makes someone want to employ you.”“It helped me gain an interest in a careers path that I hadn’t thought about.”
“I got an idea of what a real interview would be like and it taught me what I could improve on next time.”
Assistant Principal, Sophie Enstone said, “One to one feedback from the mock interviews was useful and very well received by the students, and the range of employers represented was excellent. This event really helps with the school careers enrichment."
Sarah Colgate from Computacenter UK commented, “Those that know the career path they want to take seemed very focused and driven, whilst those that were unsure seemed to be genuinely interested in opportunities at Computacenter. I didn’t know what career path I wanted to take when I was younger and I wish my school had had these sorts of events 25 years ago! Keep up the great work YC Hertfordshire!”
Carol Kirby from Borras Construction said, “We recognise the importance of careers events as they give us a good opportunity to engage with the students and promote the many careers and job opportunities there are in the construction industry. We are always happy to work with YC Hertfordshire as they run such well organised events.”
David Carroll, Managing Account Director at Fairview Estates, remarked, “The students engaged well. Some of the CVs and interviewees were excellent and those who were less polished listened attentively to my feedback. They asked some intelligent questions about my accountancy career and really got involved, even when their career interests were in a completely different field.”
David Hoskins, YC Hertfordshire Employment and Skills Coordinator for Broxbourne said, “It was fantastic to see so many employers giving up their valuable time to support these young people at the start of their journey.”
The next step for these students will be undertaking work experience in the summer, with a total of over 700 year 10 students across the Broxbourne borough will have undertaken work experience through YC Hertfordshire. It is an invaluable opportunity for them to engage with their local and wider community whilst also gaining unique insights into a career and workplace that is of interest to them, with a view to informing their post-16 choices.
