Young people achieve accreditation success at YouthZone project
20 January 2016
More and more young people in South Oxhey are enjoying the new upgraded facilities at YouthZone. A new Tuesday night project for those in Years 8 and 9 is now attracting over 40 young people on a regular basis.

In addition to the sports hall, the new facilities at YouthZone now include a dedicated IT / group-work room, a modern life skills / training kitchen with five new workstations plus an upgraded multi-use area. The young people have been making the most of the opportunities that these provide.

Last term the focus for the project included healthy living, sports, food hygiene, independent living and communication skills – with 24 young people achieving food hygiene accreditations and a further 14 gaining team game accreditations. This term, the youth work team will be leading sessions on confidence building and smoking awareness – leading to accreditations in both topics.
The youth workers have been delighted with the popularity of the project. The focus on this age group has given younger users extra confidence to attend. This has resulted in a wide mix of young people, all from the local area, many of whom did not know each other previously – or had, perhaps, lost contact since primary school.
“I never knew what it was like at YouthZone and I can’t believe I never came before,” said one young person, while another commented, “I’m looking forward to learning about self-esteem and confidence this term because it’s something that I struggle with that we don’t learn at school”.
