Young people benefit from wellbeing care boxes

29 March 2019

More than 50 care leavers have benefitted from wellbeing boxes which promote emotional health and wellbeing, as part of this year’s Feeling Good Week.

The boxes were produced by YC Hertfordshire and Targeted Youth Support thanks to funding from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service as part of its annual Feeling Good Week. YC Hertfordshire matched the funding to ensure that more boxes could reach those who would benefit most.

The wellbeing parcels included word search books, pens, mindfulness colouring books, herbal tea, shower gel, a mental health handbook from MIND, a list of NHS approved apps and tips for when a young person is having a bad day.

The boxes have been distributed by Care Leaver Personal Advisors working with children and young people in care.

The feedback from those distributing the care boxes has been overwhelmingly positive. They said:

“My two young people were really impressed with the wellbeing boxes.”

“He really liked his box. It is the first time in a while I have seen him smile.”

“I gave another box out to one of my young people and they were overwhelmed by the box and thought his was a great idea and really liked what was inside it.”

“Great stuff and because they received the box they feel we are thinking of them and know where to access support should they need this in the future.”

“The boxes are very timely indeed – I had some young people who are feeling pretty low and delivering the wellbeing box made a real difference, with some young people getting in touch who had been out of contact-so thanks again.”

Nancy Burge from Children’s Services Participation Team said: “We thought of the idea because we know that mental health and wellbeing is an issue which is very important to CHICC Care Leaver’s Group, as they are aware of how much mental health affects young people in care and care leavers.

“The idea was to provide things that could enable care leavers to look after themselves and get through bad days, especially those who may be waiting for support”.
