Young people from Croxley Green take part in team building skills at Rickmansworth Fire Station
12 May 2017
Hertfordshire firefighters led a group of ten young people from YC Hertfordshire’s Croxley Green Youth Project in interactive sessions designed to boost communication skills and teamwork among young people.
The two-part programme was set up by YC Hertfordshire, part of Hertfordshire County Council, in partnership with the Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service with the aim of giving the young people an opportunity to find out more about careers in the fire service as well as showing them the importance of communication and teamwork in working together effectively.
The young people took part in a variety of activities, including fitness training, rolling out the fire hose and an assault course. In addition, they were also given the opportunity to talk to the fire-fighters directly to find out more about what they do – and to understand the importance of trust when working together in a dangerous situation.
The young people all thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, with some of them now keen to consider a career in the fire service. “I didn’t realise how much training was involved in becoming a firefighter,” commented one young person, while another added, “I didn’t know how hard it would be – imagine doing this every day!”
