Young people in Three Rivers enjoy the summer thanks to YC Hertfordshire and Tesco Bags of Help
25 September 2019
More than 40 young people from West Hyde, Mill End and the surrounding area have enjoyed taking part in a youth project at West Hyde Young People’s Centre run by YC Hertfordshire Youth Workers thanks to help with funding by Tesco Bags of Help scheme.
The project took place this summer and allowed young people to engage in a range of activities, including team sports such as football, netball, dodgeball and rounders, as well as healthy cooking and eating and arts and crafts.
Time was also taken for group discussion about those issues affecting young people today such as mental health awareness, drugs and alcohol and keeping safe by making positive choices. The programme finished with a visit to an activity centre where they took part in a low-ropes course, team challenges and archery.
The project was inspired by YC Hertfordshire Youth Workers who wanted to offer young people in the area a positive way to spend their time during the long summer holidays. YC Hertfordshire bid for funding from Tesco Bags of Help scheme and votes were cast by shoppers in order to secure a grant of £3,400 to run the programme.
The programme was a huge success, with many of the young people attending every session. Feedback from young people was positive:
“This summer project has given me so much fun and the opportunity to make new friends improve my confidence around other people that l have not spoken to before.” Jack
“I like it that everyone looks out for each other and will support each other too l think that is because the staff encourage us to all give each other a chance and listen to everyone.” Sam
“Really enjoyed this summer programme at West Hyde just a good experience with friends and feeling so safe and secure.” Daisy
“Winning has given me the best summer yet - being with friends, doing lots of different activities, having fun and not getting bored or told off from older people for hanging around the streets.” Harry
