Young People in Waltham Cross Celebrate Black History Month

27 November 2019

Young people in Broxbourne celebrated Black History Month by exploring the importance of identity and attending music workshops at YC Hertfordshire’s youth work projects and programmes.

The young people learnt about the civil rights movement through Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech and looked at the challenges that black people faced in the 1960s because of inequality and race discrimination.

Steel Pans in Motion led sessions with young people from the weekly Focus Learning Disabilities Project, giving them the chance to try out playing the steel pans themselves, while young people attending the Waltham Cross Friday Night Project, for young people aged 13-17, learnt about the origins of the steel pan, learning the basics and then playing together as a group.
