Young people say music equipment is ‘EPIC’!

01 October 2015

This summer, Youth Connexions was one of a number of partners hosting a community event designed to make young people aware of the range of opportunities open to them in Stevenage.

The DJ workshops were a highlight of the event

Organised by the housing association Affinity Sutton, the event took place in King George’s Park, Stevenage. Alongside other organisations providing support and guidance to young people, Youth Connexions ran information stalls demonstrating the variety of services on offer.

A highlight of the event were the DJ and music production workshops run for some 20 young people by Youth Connexions youth workers. Among the enthusiastic participants were a group of Year 8 students from Symonds Green, who said they were very excited to find music in the park. One of them said "Is all this equipment from Bowes? ...that's EPIC!" They decided to come along to the Bowes Lyon Centre the following day to participate in the last day of the ‘Summer Fillerz’ activities.

Sam and Sarah, two Youth Support Workers from the Stevenage Youth Work team enjoyed the opportunity to network with other community groups and share new ideas regarding potential projects. One outcome of the event that will benefit local young people is that Youth Connexions gained agreement to use the park’s pavilion for satellite projects, especially in the summer. Other plans resulting from the day are some detached sessions for the Symonds Green area, and the Bronze Arts Award programme for local Stevenage young people to run in the Autumn term.
