I chose to do an Apprenticeship because when it came to choosing what I was going to do after year 11 I decided I didn’t want to be in a full-time school environment anymore, but felt it was a waste going straight into full-time work and not getting as many qualifications while it was still possible.

I mostly heard about available opportunities through and Youth Connexions also helped. I applied for my Apprenticeship through and then had to go through a two stage interview process where they later told me I had got the job.

Positives: I enjoy that it’s mainly practical work and as an apprentice I am there to grow within the company.

Negatives: I didn’t enjoy that at the start it was pretty slow going. There was not a lot to do and some of the things I was given to do can be quite mundane.

My key advice: Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity where you basically get paid to learn, so I would recommend them to anyone who asked. But don’t wait around looking for the perfect opportunity or career plan. Applying for a job doesn’t mean that’s what you have to do for the rest of your life.
