Ian Hackett

I chose an Apprenticeship because I wanted my career to be involved with business and I wanted to move away from the classroom side after doing it for 5 years.

My business teacher recommended an Apprenticeship so I get the workplace experience as well as still learning. I went to a college open evening and spoke to the representative of Apprenticeships who directed me to the National Apprenticeship website. I also spoke to Youth Connexions at a school futures evening.

Firstly I applied online through the www.apprenticeships.org.uk which directed me to the Hertfordshire County Council website where I applied. Once selected I was invited to an interview day which involved tests of English, Maths and IT as well an interview and other group work exercises. After getting the apprenticeship I undertook a week’s induction which guided me through the workplace as an employee.

Positives: I love my job! My colleagues are friendly and helpful and are very knowledgeable especially when I carry out work with them. I have been given a variety of tasks and responsibilities which have risen since I started. The training I have received is excellent and I feel confident about passing my course with the help of North Hertfordshire College.

Negatives: You have to be prepared especially when workload gets high with college work and your work responsibilities. However, being organised makes it easier to manage.

My Key advice: An Apprenticeship is such as great way to start your career as you are in a workplace environment and still learning whilst getting paid. An Apprenticeship can also benefit you in your future career by providing you with the tools, knowledge and experience to progress.
