Support from YCH Services for Young People

YCH Services for Young People provides and information, advice, guidance and support for young people in care and care leavers up to the age of 21 through its Access Points across the county. They can also attend youth work projects in their area.

If you are a care leaver or preparing to leave care, you can also get support to help you become more independent and confident in all areas of your life. We will help you identify your goals in life and focus on how you can achieve them.

We also deliver an Independent Living Skills programme which is specifically designed to support young people in care and care leavers:

Cheshunt

If you’re a young person in care or a care leaver, you can attend any YCH project appropriate to your age. You can also get individual one-to-one support through our Access Points. To help us keep everyone safe during COVID-19, please call, text or email to make an appointment before visiting.

If you are a care leaver or preparing to leave care, you can get free support to help you become more independent and confident in all areas of your life. We will help you identify your goals in life and focus on how you can achieve them.

At the YCH Cheshunt Access Point you can get free and confidential information, advice and support – including on the following:

  • Sexual health including:
    - Free condoms through the Condom Wallet Scheme
    - Free chlamydia testing
    - Free pregnancy testing
  • Advice on general health and relationships
  • Education and exams, including exam pressure
  • Drugs, substance misuse and alcohol
  • Jobs and careers
  • Youth work projects and programmes
  • Benefits and finance
  • Housing and homelessness
  • Improving resilience, self-esteem and confidence
  • Relationships including family and friendships
  • Training and apprenticeships
  • Independent living skills

We also have computers that you can use for research, developing CVs, searching for jobs and training and accessing other information.

Harpenden

This YCH Care Leavers' Independent Living Skills programme is for young people in care or care leavers aged 13-21 who live in the St Albans District. Come along and use our state-of-the-art training kitchen at Harpenden Young People's Centre and learn important skills that will help you to live more independently and healthily as well as build your confidence.

The YCH Care Leavers' Independent Living Skills programme is for young people in care or care leavers in St Albans District aged 13-21.

Friendly and supportive YCH youth workers will help you gain valuable life-skills through interactive and engaging activities.

YCH's Care Leavers' Independent Living Skills programme is an accredited programme that consists of seven modules:

  • cooking skills
  • managing your money
  • relationships
  • healthy living
  • emotional wellbeing
  • keeping safe
  • DIY skills

When you've completed a subject area you will receive a City & Guilds qualification, which will enhance your CV.

All YCH youth work projects and programmes enable young people to learn new skills, increase their knowledge and develop confidence, self-esteem and resilience.

Harpenden Young People's Centre is fully wheelchair accessible.

Come to the YCH Life Skills Project at Watford Young People's Centre and learn important life skills that will help you to live more independently and build your confidence.
